GENERAL DETAILS of the PROJECT

WHEAT PRECISION FARMING

The project “Wheat precision farming in Thessaly” is a pilot project of regional scope financed by the EUROPEAN AGRICULTURAL FUND FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT (State Aid Status CAN. 1305/2013, Article 35) and is implemented within the framework of the Operational Program for Rural Development of Greece PAA 2014-2020 and in particular in under Measure 16, Sub-Measure 16.1-16.5, Cooperation on environmental projects, environmental practices and climate change actions.

The project employs innovative precision farming tools to accurately and timely topdress N fertilization to durum wheat in order to increase fertilization efficiency, increase grain yield and quality, and at the same time contribute to mitigating the negative impacts on the environment, the climate for the protection of human health.

Project details:

The duration of the project (code of Action II - Μ16ΣΥΝ2-00330) is three years and the total eligible budget is 148.297,13 €. 5.000,00 € (Action I) & 143.297,13 € (Action II).

General objective:

The spatial and temporal variability of soil nitrogen (N) content and the synchronization of N fertilizer inputs and crop N demands make often the common farmer practice of uniform topdressing N fertilization highly inefficient. The aim of the project is the application of variable fertilization of N in durum wheat according to the actual crop needs. Through the use of near real time data (images from satellites or drones), maps of vegetation indices (NDVI) are produced. These maps will be used to apply variable N fertilization rates with precision fertilizer spreaders in order to increase yields and to mitigate the negative impacts on the environment and the climate.

Scope of measure 16

The scope of Measure 16, which concerns Sub-Measure 16.1 - 16.5, includes two actions:

Creation of partnerships, establishment of ESK Operational Groups, with the aim of promoting actions that demonstrate respect for the protection of the environment and adaptation to climate change

Implementation of the business plan (project) of collaborations in order to promote actions that demonstrate respect for environmental protection and adaptation to climate change

Specific objectives:

  • The assessment of the variability of the nutritional status of wheat plants during the growing season and the management of N fertilization under specific conditions (site-specific N management).
  • The use of precision agriculture (PA) technologies in the application of variable N fertilization and the rational use of N fertilizers in durum wheat to improve grain production and quality.
  • To mitigate the effects of the irrational use of nitrogen fertilizers which are the cause of major environmental and health problems through greenhouse gas emissions (NH3, N2O, NO), leaching (mainly NO3-), surface runoff and erosion.
  • Yet the magnitude of environmental benefits of variable N fertilization is often not well known or is highly variable. The comparison in agronomic and economic terms of the uniform (usual producer practice) and variable N fertilization rate technology (VRT).
